Fabrics fall into four (4) main categories in the garden: landscape fabric, frost blankets, burlap and shade cloth. Each is very different from the next and they all have a very important role to play for their specific task. From weed protection to frost protection, to winter wraps and sun protection, each fabric suits its need perfectly. These sometimes overlooked fabrics are integral to good gardening practices.

Landscape Fabric

Landscape fabric is ideal for forming a protective, clean layer between soil and mulch, soil and rock, soil and pavers. It is strong and durable, allows rain and water through but inhibits the growth of weeds. It also allows your decorative and aesthetic rocks and mulches to stay cleaner longer. When these products come in direct contact with the soil invariably in short order, they will start to get dirty as the soil gets wet and seeps up; a layer of fabric easily prevents this.

Frost Blankets

There is no worse feeling as a gardener than finally finishing planting your tender seedlings and hearing them mention frost in the weather forecast. Well as gardeners ourselves, we too do not like this feeling either, so enter the world of frost blankets. These sturdy fabrics allow you to rest assured knowing the frost will be kept off your tender shoots or mature plants. Ideal for spring or autumn, these frost blankets are available in pre-packed sizes or bulk options. From protecting your tomatoes in the fall or seedlings in the spring, they are well worth their weight in gold when needed.

Burlap

Burlap has several uses in a garden. It can be used as a wind and ice break for winter protection, deter animals from munching on your plants, and cover roots while transplanting and dividing. It allows airflow and moisture exchange so it is ideally suited for multiple purposes in your garden.

Pro-tip – Burlap is also aesthetically pleasing too and can transform the look of your garden.

Shade Cloth

As the name implies this porous fabric is used for providing shade. Occasionally the sun can be too hot, especially in the middle of the day, for our tender plants; enter the shade cloth. This material protects your plants from burning while allowing ventilation and moisture to pass through. Shade cloth is ideal for scorching areas.
